lets back up, was there more than .003 between the piston skirt and cylinder wall? if so it needs bored out and fitted with a 25mm piston. i would have a machine shop do this and they can also cross hatch the cylinder for you so the new rings seal. check and see if one of our sponsors sell them, or find one on line or at a dealer. you should also replace the intake valve seal. I have run new engines over an hour to get the muffler to stop smoking.

Does it smoke right when you start it up, or a little later after it starts to warm up. I rebuild several a year, and if it was a real smoker the muffler will have oil in it. It will start up with no smoke, but a minute or so later it will start to smoke. The hotter it gets the more it smokes till you get it burned out.
