Proper 36V Charger Shut Off Voltage

I have a 36V 89 Club Car DS into which I have just installed new batteries. Naturally I want to take care of them properly for the longest possible life.
It concerns me that my charger is still charging at 44.5V so I am shutting it off manually.
I have read that it's acceptable for the charger to go as high as 48V before shutting off but that seems a bit high to me and I don't want to burn up my new batteries.
So what's the real deal on proper shut off voltage for a 36 volt cart?

in normal operation : the charger is actually forcing current into the batteries
to do that it must overcome the battery voltage
as a result it must put out a much higher voltage than what the battery has on it

new batteries are Not fully charged
they normally have only 75% +/- charge on them
it will take a while for them to charge fully
part of taking care of them is to allow a full initial charge
then a minimal usage discharge and recharge to full for at least 10 times
one comparison of minimal use i have seen said only 9 holes of golf max

if your charger is OEM and in good operating condition
you should leave it alone and let it do what it was designed/intended to do

all that you need to do is monitor the individual cells and be sure to keep the water reasonably close to full
but NOT over full, because then it will simply boil out and make a corrosive mess in your cart

there is plenty of info on watering the batteries here and elsewhere
i highly recommend lots of web surfing on the subject of Golf cart batteries
because these are not built the same as deep cycle marine or automotive

finally Never run them all the way down , and charge after each use
